Punjab: Groom to be calls of wedding for unmet demands; faces FIR
LUDHINA: A Patiala based groom to be and his brother, have been booked by the Ludhiana police as they called off the wedding which was scheduled for February 25. The victim alleged that days before the wedding the accused asked them to shift the wedding venue from Ludhiana to Patiala and also increased the numbers of guests. As they showed helplessness in meeting their demands, the accused called off the wedding.
In Ludhiana, Punjab, a groom-to-be and his brother have been booked by the police for calling off a wedding due to unmet demands. The bride's family had arranged the wedding in Ludhiana, but a week before the event, the groom's family insisted on shifting the venue to Patiala and increasing the guest count from 50 to 250. When the bride's family expressed their inability to accommodate these last-minute changes, the groom's side canceled the wedding. An FIR has been registered against the groom, Rahul Chayal, and his brother, Monty Chayal, under sections related to cheating, criminal intimidation, and conspiracy.
This incident is part of a concerning trend where weddings are being disrupted due to sudden and unreasonable demands. For instance, in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, a wedding was canceled after the groom slapped the bride on stage over unmet dowry demands, leading to a violent altercation between the families. Similarly, in Bengaluru, a groom's family called off the wedding a night before the ceremony, demanding ₹50 lakh, half a kilogram of gold, and a Mercedes-Benz car as dowry.
These incidents highlight the persistent issue of dowry-related disputes and the need for stricter enforcement of laws to protect the rights and dignity of brides and their families.
